37th Annual Autumn Concert

On October 22 (Sat.), 2016, the Korean Music Association (KMA) of Washington presents its 37th Annual Autumn Concert at Benaroya Nordstrom Recital Hall. Under the artistic direction of Ray M. Kim, the president of KMA, the concert feature a wide variety of classical music across Korea and the Western hemisphere. This year’s concert begins with a Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 9 in E-flat Major by 2016 KMA’s Youth Competition’s grand winner, Daniel Park Oslin. Next, the concert features a Northwestern Premiere of an original flute piece composed by Jiyoung Kim, the award-winning composer of the Seattle Composers’ Alliance. Dahyang Kwon, a Korean traditional master singer, perform Pansori, a Korean genre of musical storytelling. A special guest, Soprano Haekyung Hwang sing a number of songs, including Gagok, a genre of Korean vocal classical music.

Popular opera numbers are presented, including “Largo al Fatotum” from Gioacchino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” by Kwangsuk Gu, La Spagnola by YeonSoo Kim Lee and “Ah, je veux vivre” from Charles Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliette” by Dohee Kim. In addition to opera, many Korean Gagoks was performed. In the final performance, the stage was filled with the Evergreen Choir of KMA presenting various choir numbers, including “Longing for Mt. Keumgangsan,” with Anthony James, one of the most famous Gagoks.
