KMA Youth Music Competition Rules & Application

RULES and REGULATIONS


  1. Date and Place

    • Date: Saturday, March 4th, 2023

    • Place: Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Mercer Island 8501 SE 40th St, Mercer Island, WA 98040

    • Winner's concert on March 5th, 2023, 3:30pm


  2. Eligibility

    • The competition is open to All students from 5th to 12th grade.


  3. Divisions: Piano, String, Woodwind/Brass, Voice, Chamber

    • Junior Division

      This division is open to 5th to 8th grade students

    • Senior Division

      This division is open to 9th to 12th grade students


  4. Enrollment

    • Registration Period: January 22nd to February 25th

    • Each contestant must submit a completed application with a $60 fee between January 22nd to February 25th.

  5. Requirements

    • Instrument: Each performer will play one or two selections of contrasting styles from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods within 10 minutes.

    • Voice: Choose two contrasting selections from classical repertoire within 10 min. No musical theater selections and selections should be sung in original languages.

    • Chamber (Duet~ Octets): Each Chamber group will play one or two selections of contrasting styles from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods within 10 minutes.

    • Each contestant must perform by memory except Chambers.

    • Each contestant is required to provide his/her own accompanist.

    • Each contestant must bring two copies of music for judges

    • Entrants must check in 30 minutes before their performance

    • If 10 minutes of allotted time is exceeded, judges will stop listening the performance.

    • The judges' decisions are final and may not be appealed.


  6. Our Adjudicators

    • Yerin Kim, DMA: Director of Keyboard Studies Music department, Central Washington University

    • Michael Jinsoo Lim: Concertmaster, Pacific Northwest Ballet and Violin Faculty, Cornish College of the Arts


  7. Prizes, Awards Ceremony, and Winners Recital

    • The Grand prize winner of the entire competition will receive a $500 scholarship award and have the opportunity to perform at KMA's Annual Concert, which will take place at Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall.

    • Each division will be awarded First Place: $200, Second Place: $100, and Honorable Mentions.

    • The Awards Ceremony will be held on the next day of the competition at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on March 5th, 3:30pm.

    • Selected winners will have the opportunity to perform in a concert at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on March 5th, 3:30pm. There also may be an interview for the winners. Detailed information will be emailed to the winners.

    • There may be an opportunity for the winner to be invited to perform at an event at the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle.
